Tara Carlson

Jul 11, 2017

Looking to visit a winery this summer? If so, it probably won’t take you long to find one, seeing as how there are nearly 3,000 commercial vineyards in America. And as of just a few years ago, there is now at least one winery in every state, including Alaska and Hawaii. But while there are plenty of wineries to choose from, a select few have managed to set themselves apart from the pack.

So whether you’re a tried and true vino looking for the next great bottle, or you just want to spend the day soaking up the sun with friends, these are some of the best vineyards and wineries in the country.

Carlson Vineyards

Colorado

In the heart of Colorado’s wine country, this family-owned vineyard is dedicated to producing the most premium wine in the Rocky Mountains. Whether you’re looking for an internationally renowned Riesling, or want to satisfy your sweet tooth with a bottle of Cherry ‘n Chocolate, Carlson Vineyards is a favorite among locals and visitors.

Saltwater Farm Vineyard

Connecticut

While most vineyards are known for their beautiful landscapes and scenic backdrops, Saltwater Farm Vineyard has a unique feel all its own. Located on the Long Island Sound, this vineyard is a hit among wine and history lovers alike, as their bottled wine is stored in a beautifully remodeled World War II-era aircraft hanger.

Bedell Cellars

New York

Little did founders Kip and Susan Bedell know that the single grape vine they planted in 1980 would grow into one of Long Island’s most prominent vineyards. The most recent addition to their long list of accomplishments is that a selection of Bedell wines were proudly served at the 2013 U.S. Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama.

Huber’s Orchard, Winery & Vineyards

Indiana

Huber’s has been family owned and farmed since 1843, and it doesn’t look like that will change any time soon! If you’re in the area, or feel like a quick summer road trip, head over to Huber’s this July for their wine of the month — peach wine! Made using their very own tree-ripened peaches, their old-fashioned production techniques make this bottle truly one-of-a-kind. And if you’re more interested in eating peaches than drinking them, peach picking conditions in Indiana are never better than in July!

Ste. Chapelle Winery

Idaho

Though located only miles away from Northern California’s renowned wineries, no one ever believed Idaho would become the next major vineyard destination. But just a few years, and 50 vineyards later, Idaho has become a wine lover’s paradise! And leading the pack is Ste. Chapelle Winery, the largest vineyard in Idaho.

Boordy Vineyard

Maryland

Celebrating 72 years of grapes and wine, Boordy Vineyard is a staple in Maryland. Just last year, their coveted Boordy Albarino won the 2016 Maryland Governor’s Cup — an award for the best Maryland grown wine.

Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch in Saint Helena

California

You didn’t think we’d leave “wine country” off of the list, did you? Revived by the Hall family in 1989, Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch is a century old, 650-acre working ranch, with its vineyard as “the backbone” of the land. After you’ve found your favorite wine, pair it with a fruity snack from the Farmstead farmer’s market! With over 500 varieties of organic heirloom fruits and vegetables, Farmstead is known for its unique fruits, like Pink pearl apples, Seascape strawberries, and Blenheim apricots, just to name a few!

While you’re taking in the scenery and enjoying the latest wines, don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch and plenty of snacks!
