For those of us who are self-proclaimed “do-it-yourselfers,” DIY face and hair masks are an essential part of any home beauty routine. We all know fruits are full of vitamins and minerals that are necessary to any diet, but it turns out you can benefit from the power of fruit without ever eating them (though we still suggest you do)! If you don’t have the time to go out searching for a product that’s perfect for you, or you just want to avoid all the chemicals found in traditional masks, we’ve got the best, all natural, and easy-to-make masks for every skin and hair type.

Before you start

  • Make sure to wash your skin and exfoliate. Exfoliating will not only remove a layer of dead skin from your face, but it will also enhance blood circulation. If you’re doing a hair mask, DON’T wash your hair. The natural oils in your unwashed hair will help absorb the nutrients.
  • Throw on an old t-shirt that you don’t mind getting dirty because things are about to get messy!
  • If you plan on relaxing while watching a little TV or reading, throw a towel down on your chair to prevent any food from potentially staining your furniture.

Skin

Papaya & Honey Face Mask

If you have dry, flaky skin, we’ve got the answer to your prayers! While the papaya gives you a natural looking glow, the honey works to hydrate your skin and improve its resistance to acne.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 halves of papaya
  • 1 tsp. of organic honey

Directions:

Step 1: Blend and mash the papaya until it becomes smooth and paste-like.

Step 2: Add 1 tsp. of honey to the papaya.

Step 3: Apply a thick coating (a little less than a quarter of an inch thick) to a freshly washed face.

Step 4: Let the mixture sit for 15 - 20 minutes.

Step 5: Wash your face with JUST water and pat it dry with a clean towel.

Step 6: Moisturize your skin with a non-scented lotion.

Banana & Honey Face Mask

You probably know that bananas are one of the healthiest fruits for your body, but did you also know it’s a powerhouse for your skin as well? This mask works best for women who suffer from dry, oily skin, because bananas are full of vitamins that will moisturize your skin and protect it against free radicals that cause premature aging.

What you’ll need:

  • ½ banana
  • ½ tsp. honey
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice

Directions:

Step 1: Using a fork, mash the banana in a small bowl.

Step 2: Mix ½ tsp. of honey to the banana.

Step 3: Apply a generous amount to your face and neck.

Step 4: Leave the mixture on for about 20 minutes, then wash it off with warm water.

Step 5: Apply a gentle, non-oil based lotion to your skin.

Cucumber & Milk Mask

If you’re unsure of what your skin type is, or have a combination of different types, this is the mask for you! The cucumber and milk will help soften and relax your skin, while the milk enhances skin’s elasticity and complexion.

What you’ll need

  • ½ cucumber
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tbsp. of honey
  • 1 tbsp. of brown sugar

Directions:

Step 1: Peel half a cucumber and blend it into a puree.

Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix all of your ingredients (the milk, honey, and brown sugar) together. Let it sit for 10 minutes so that all the oils have time to mix into each other.

Step 3: Add your cucumber puree into the mixture and apply it to your face.

Step 4: After 20 minutes, wash your face with warm water and pat it dry.

Hair

Rosemary, Avocado and Coconut Oil Mask

When it comes to hair rejuvenation, coconut oil is your new best friend. The oils from the avocado and coconut will hydrate damaged hair.

What you’ll need:

  • ½ an avocado (you may need a full avocado if you have long and/or thick hair)
  • Rosemary essential oils
  • 4 tbsp. of coconut oil

Directions:

Step 1: Mix the ingredients together into a small bowl until it resembles a light green paste.

Step 2: Use your hands to run the mixture through your hair. Once you’ve applied it all, run a comb through your hair to help make sure every strand is evenly covered.

Step 3: Rinse your hair with warm water until the entire solution is gone. Once your hair is clean and avocado free, rinse it with shampoo and conditioner as normal.

Strawberry Hair Mask

If you have greasy, but dull hair, you’ll love the fact that strawberries eliminate excess oil and grease, while giving your hair a healthy looking shine. And as an added bonus, strawberries are in season right now! So you can throw a few in your hair while you also throw a few in your mouth.

What you’ll need:

  • 8 fresh strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Directions:

Step 1: Blend all the ingredients together by hand until you form a puree.

Step 2: Using a spray bottle, spray your hair with a small amount of warm water. Once your hair is damp, apply the mixture evenly to your hair.

Step 3: Let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes and rinse it well with warm water.
